When you haven’t used your own voice in a while
This coaching session started with a quiet confession:
“I sing all the time – but not really for me.”
This client is a professional voice coach, a strong singer, and the frontman for a metal band preparing for a high-intensity gig. He’s surrounded by sound. He teaches all week. He works with singers every day.
But when it comes to his voice?
He’s out of practice.
And that’s more common than you’d think.
Shift #1: Realising What’s Missing
He came in rehearsed, thoughtful, and slightly unsettled.
“I’ve been teaching so much… I feel like I sing a lot, but realistically, I don’t sing for myself at all.”
It came across, not in lack of skill – he’s got plenty, but in how disconnected he felt from his own voice. Long notes were drifting. Breath management wasn’t quite working. There was tightness where there used to be ease.
He wasn’t lost, but he was no longer at home.
That’s when we started the real work.
Shift #2: The new voice
His band material demands fast switching – from classical-influenced phrasing to gritty contemporary sounds in the space of a line. He’d mapped out vowel shapes, adjusted his jaw, even refined his vowel strategy mid-line. But something still wasn’t clicking.
“I’m struggling to navigate that now with this new voice I have.”
That phrase stood out: this new voice I have.
His voice wasn’t faulty, but his sense of it had shifted. After months of not truly singing for himself, his vocal identity felt unfamiliar – like slipping into a jacket that almost fits but hangs a little wrong.
Shift #3: Rehearsal, Reflection, Reconnection
We worked through it together. He played in his sound setup, tested volume levels, checked pitch in the high phrases. We used two different resonance shapes, one for classical and one for contemporary. As he moved through the material – live, fully present – something shifted.
He started hearing himself again.
“Okay, I’ll try that one again.”
It wasn’t about nailing the note. It was about reconnecting with the source – not just the body technique, but the musical instinct that had been quieted by teaching and fatigue.
We adjusted vowel shape a little more. Streamlined transitions. And reminded his voice how to trust itself again.
Who This Kind of Session Is For
This is the work no one talks about. The experienced singers who get so caught up in teaching, directing, or caregiving that they quietly disconnect from their own artistry.
If you’re:
-
Doing great work with other people’s voices
-
Gigging, but not feeling quite “you” on stage
-
Teaching more than singing
-
Or second-guessing sounds you used to love
This kind of session will help. We clear the noise. We listen to what you need. And we rebuild the connection, one phrase at a time.
