What is your motivation?

If you’re a singer, teacher, or musician who wakes up every day excited to get to work, fully aligned with your purpose, you might not need this article.

But if you’ve found yourself wondering why you’re doing this—or feeling like you’re just going through the motions—you’re not alone. Most of us, at some point in our careers, lose touch with our motivation. Life gets busy, and the passion that once felt so clear can become murky. When that happens, it’s important to take a step back and reflect on what truly drives you.

Let’s talk about how you can reconnect with your “why” and build a career that feels as fulfilling as the day you started.

What Motivates You?

Motivation is what keeps you showing up—it’s the driving force behind every lesson you teach, every rehearsal you lead, and every performance you give. But motivation isn’t the same for everyone.

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • Are you motivated by financial security?
  • Do you thrive on seeing the difference you make in people’s lives?
  • Are you driven by a vision to change the industry or leave a legacy?

Most of us are motivated by a combination of these things. But when your “why” gets buried under deadlines, obligations, and self-doubt, your energy can wane. The good news? You can rediscover your motivation—and use it to create a career that reflects who you are today.

So, what motivates singers and singing teachers to work?

Financial Security – a solid foundation

There’s no shame in being motivated by financial stability. We all need to pay the bills and build a future that we and our families can count on. But if financial rewards are your only driver, your work can start to feel like a grind rather than a passion.

Ask yourself: Am I building my career around survival, or is there room for joy and purpose?

If the answer surprises you, that’s okay. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to help you see the full picture.

Making an impact – changing lives

Many singers and teachers are driven by connection—their motivation comes from knowing they’re making a real difference.

  • For teachers, it’s the light in a student’s eyes when they hit a breakthrough.
  • For performers, it’s the way your audience is transported, even if just for a moment.

This type of motivation is incredibly rewarding, but it can also lead to burnout. If your identity is wrapped up in pleasing others, you may find yourself giving too much without filling your own cup.

Take a moment to reflect: Am I making time to replenish my own energy while serving others? And am I charging enough?

Shaping the industry – innovators and changemakers

For some of you, the motivation runs even deeper—you want to innovate, influence, and inspire the next generation of musicians and educators. Maybe you dream of creating new methods, shaping vocal pedagogy, or building a program that transforms how people learn.

But this type of motivation requires resilience. Change takes time, and external validation can be unpredictable. Staying grounded in your vision is key to lasting impact.

Ask yourself: Am I measuring my success based on internal values or outside approval?

Building a Legacy

If you’re motivated by legacy, you’re thinking about what you’ll leave behind—what others will remember about your contributions. Maybe you dream of opening a music academy, writing a definitive book, or becoming a trusted mentor in your field. Your work becomes about creating something enduring, something that will influence and inspire long after you’ve stepped off the stage or out of the studio.

Legacy-building is inspiring, but it can also feel overwhelming. The best way to build a lasting impact is to break it into manageable steps—small, consistent actions that align with your long-term vision.

If your goals feel too big or unclear, you don’t have to tackle them alone.

What type of motivation drives you?

It took me a long time to realise what motivates me. It certainly wasn’t the money! It never has been.

It’s the satisfaction of helping the individual and the music work together, of uncovering each person’s own unique vibration and history, of finding the real person and helping them perform or teach to the best of their ability, and helping each teacher/performer/coach find their own niche and thrive within it.

Your career doesn’t have to feel scattered or uncertain. When you’re clear on what motivates you, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. That’s where I come in. With four  decades of experience mentoring singers, teachers, and musicians, I can help you:
